ROLEX OYSTERQUARTZ DATEJUST ROMAN NUMERAL 'SCOC' DIAL W/ BOX BOOKLETS & SWING TAGS REF. 17000 CIRCA 1988
The Rolex Datejust is the ‘poster boy’ for Rolex. Globally recognised as one of the most popular watches in the world and most certainly one of the most versatile. As a luxury watch it can be worn by anyone, for any occasion and at an achievable price point for a watch of its quality. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust, since its release in 1945, has seen a multitude of different case materials from stainless steel to platinum, dial variations of every colour under the sun, set in an array of different styles, bezel variations and repeatedly improved mechanics. Whether you like the model or not, there is no denying that a Rolex Datejust is the definition of a ‘timeless watch’. During the so-called ‘quartz crisis’ or ‘quartz revolution’, depending on what side of the fence your on, in the 1970s and early 1980s many luxury brands, who were used to the more traditional forms of watchmaking, were ushered into the use of quartz movements. To keep up with the increasing demand for the new technology, Rolex released a series of models which took on a slightly different shape to is predecessors.
This reference is a 17000, which showcases a white gloss dial with applied silver roman numeral hour markers and straight hands. A three o’clock is a date window with an ‘open 6’ date wheel. The dial is in perfectly maintained condition, clear type and with all lume plots remaining. This piece is fitted with a smooth bezel on a 36mm stainless steel case. Unlike the traditional Oyster Perpetual case, the ref. 17000 comes with a far chunkier, heavy weight case as though it was built for durability. As opposed to its counterparts’ smooth silhouette, the oyster quartz has a squared off finish which, in keeping with the general aesthetic of the watch, continues through to the bracelet. This watch is a good example of a true vintage piece that has been worn and enjoyed by its former owner. There are hairline scratches and dinks throughout the case and bracelet. Housed behind the screw down case back is the 11-jewel certified chronometer calibre 5035 engine turned quartz movement which is currently running. This piece comes with its box, outer box, booklets, purchase receipts and swing tags, one with matching serial number and reference.
